Interlocking Shetland Sheepdog Club of Monee
Our Ethics Statement

In an effort to promote the overall well-being and genetic health of the Shetland sheepdog and to set an example of high standards for clubs and breeders all over the country, we, the members of Interlocking Shetland Sheepdog Club of Monee, Inc. encourage our members to do the following things.

Any dog or bitch owned, co-owned, or leased by a member of ISSCM shall not be bred until it has received the following health clearances:

1.  A written report from a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist showing that the dog or bitch is free from genetic eye disease. It is also recommended that a dog or bitch be rechecked for PRA between 4 and 5 years of age.

2.  Age appropriate certification from OFA stating that the dog or bitch is free from hip dysplasia. This means an OFA preliminary report for dogs or bitches under 24 months and OFA certification for dogs or bitches over 24 months.  Written proof of Penn-Hip evaluation is also valid.

3.  In order to protect the breed all ISSCM members also agree to require that all bitches who are accepted for breeding to any male owned,co-owned, or leased by a member of ISSCM have all the health clearances outlined in paragraphs 1 & 2.

4.  It is strongly recommended but not required that all breeding animals also have a VetGen test for vWD performed prior to breeding. If a member knowingly uses vWD carrier stud dogs or bitches for breeding, it is the member's responsibility to inform those who are using these carrier dogs or bitches of the dog's status prior to breeding.

The Sheltie is basically a healthy breed and clearances such as these can help maintain that status. Buy only AKC registered  shelties from breeders that do these tests and are open to proving they do.
Only those members who adopt these recommendations are listed with the club's puppy referral person.
Once you've found a good breeder...........

When leaving a deposit with a breeder to reserve a puppy, be sure you get a receipt and that the receipt says exactly what you expecting to buy. While the litter may be too young for a specific puppy to be selected, you have the right to know you will be getting what you want. Have the breeder put on the receipt what sex, adult size, and color puppy your money is holding. If you require a particular temperament for a particular reason (agility, therapy) be sure that is on the receipt too. In addition under Illinois law, you have the legal right to a full refund if you cancel within 72 hours of leaving the deposit.
Be sure to discuss with the breeder the term and/or conditions wherein the deposit would be refunded. Add it to the receipt.   Interlocking Shetland Sheepdog Club of Monee, Inc does not intervene in money matters between parties. Therefore make sure you know up front the terms to which you are agreeing when leaving a deposit with a breeder.
